After tracking the Brittles to the plantation of the wealthy Spencer 'Big Daddy' Bennett and killing them, the liberated Django partners with Dr. Schultz and becomes his apprentice. Later that evening, the duo are hunted by Bennett and a large gang of white supremacists (a reference to the early ), but Dr. Schultz deceives and kills most of Bennett's gang with an explosive and Django kills Bennett. Schultz explains that he feels responsible for Django since Django is the first person he has ever freed, and feels morally obliged to help Django reunite with Broomhilda. Now fully trained, Django collects his first bounty, keeping the flyer for good luck. In 1859, Django and Dr. Schultz travel to, where they learn the identity of Broomhilda's owner: Calvin J. Candie, the charming but cruel owner of the Candyland, where slaves are forced to fight to the death in brutal wrestling matches called 'Mandingo fights'. Schultz and Django meet Calvin at his gentleman's club in and submit their offer to buy one of his best fighters; however, this is a pretense. Their ulterior motive is to purchase Broomhilda. Intrigued, Calvin invites them to his ranch at Candyland. During the ride to Candyland, they come across a group of Calvin's slave trackers cornering one of Calvin's Mandingo fighters, D'artagnan, who tried to run away due to no longer wanting to fight. Calvin says that because he bought D'artagnan for $500, D'artagnan (who has only fought three times) must fight at least five times. When Django and Dr. Schultz offer to reimburse Calvin and then change their minds, Calvin has his chief tracker, Mr. Stonecipher, unleash several attack dogs that. After finding Broomhilda and telling her of their plan, Dr. Schultz claims to be charmed by her and offers to buy her as well. During dinner, Calvin's staunchly loyal house slave Stephen becomes suspicious. Deducing that Django and Broomhilda know each other and that the sale of the Mandingo fighter is a, Stephen alerts Calvin, who alters the deal so that Broomhilda will be sold instead of the Mandingo fighter. Schultz agrees, and the papers for her freedom are drawn up and signed. Calvin smugly insists that the deal be sealed through a, which Dr. Schultz refuses. When Calvin threatens to have his bodyguard Butch Pooch kill Broomhilda, Dr. Schultz, who has finally had enough of Calvin's cruelty and is still thinking about D'artagnan's death, shoots Calvin through the heart with his, killing him. As Stephen mourns Calvin, Butch turns around and kills Dr. Schultz by shooting him with his, and is killed by Django in turn with Butch's own. A begins, and Django shoots down a great number of Calvin's henchmen before surrendering when Broomhilda is taken. The next morning, Stephen tells Django that Calvin's sister, Lara Lee Candie-Fitzwilly, is in charge now, and he will be sold to a mine and worked to death. En route to the mine, Django proves to his escorts that he is a bounty hunter by showing them his flyer. The escorts release him and give him a revolver, which he immediately uses to kill them before stealing a horse and returning to Candyland with a bag of. At the plantation, Django kills more of Calvin's henchmen, including Mr. Stonecipher and all the other trackers, takes Broomhilda's freedom papers from the dead Dr. Schultz's pocket, and frees his wife from a nearby cabin. Production [ ] Development [ ]. Tarantino in Paris at the film's French premiere, January 2013 In 2007, Tarantino discussed an idea for a type of set in the United States' pre-Civil War. He called this type of film 'a southern', stating that he wanted 'to do movies that deal with America's horrible past with slavery and stuff but do them like spaghetti westerns, not like big issue movies. I want to do them like they're genre films, but they deal with everything that America has never dealt with because it's ashamed of it, and other countries don't really deal with because they don't feel they have the right to.' Tarantino later explained the genesis of the idea: 'I was writing a book about when I came up with a way to tell the story.. I was writing about how his movies have this evil Wild West, a horrible Wild West. It was surreal, it dealt a lot with. So I'm writing this whole piece on this, and I'm thinking: 'I don't really know if Sergio was thinking [this] while he was doing this. But I know I'm thinking it now. And I can do it!' ' Tarantino finished the script on April 26, 2011, and handed in the final draft to. In October 2012, frequent Tarantino collaborator said that he and Tarantino had intended to Django Unchained with RZA's Tarantino-presented martial-arts film. The crossover would have seen a younger version of the blacksmith character from RZA's film appear as a slave in an auction. However, scheduling conflicts prevented RZA's participation. One inspiration for the film is Corbucci's 1966 spaghetti western, whose star has a cameo appearance in Django Unchained. Another inspiration is the 1975 film, about a slave trained to fight other slaves. Tarantino included scenes in the snow as a homage to. ' Silenzio takes place in the snow. I liked the action in the snow so much, Django Unchained has a big snow section in the middle,' Tarantino said in an interview. The title Django Unchained alludes to the titles of the 1966 Corbucci film Django;, the American title for the 1959 Italian epic fantasy film Ercole e la regina di Lidia, about the mythical hero's escape from enslavement to a wicked master; and to, the 1970 American biker film about a biker exacting revenge on a large group of. Nero suggested that he play a mysterious horseman who haunts Django in visions and is revealed in an ending flashback to be Django's father; Tarantino opted not to use the idea. Was in negotiations to join as Ace Woody, a Mandingo trainer and Candie's right-hand man, but Costner dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. Was cast instead but also later left the role. When Kurt Russell dropped out, the role of Ace Woody was not recast; instead, the character was merged with 's character, Billy Crash. Was offered the role of Scotty Harmony, a gambler who loses Broomhilda to Candie in a poker game, but turned it down due to scheduling conflicts with. Was also offered the role, but declined in order to appear in. Neither Scotty nor the poker game appear in the final cut of the film. Hill later appeared in the film in a different role. Said that he 'would have loved, loved to have' been in the film but would be unable to appear because of a prior commitment to direct his first film,. Costume design [ ]. The theme, 'Django', was also the theme song of the 1966 film. Musician wrote an original song for the film's soundtrack, but it was rejected by Tarantino, who explained that 'Ocean wrote a fantastic ballad that was truly lovely and poetic in every way, there just wasn't a scene for it.' Frank Ocean later published the song, entitled 'Wiseman', on his blog. The film also features a few famous pieces of, including ' and 'Dies Irae' from. Tarantino has stated that he avoids using full scores of original music: 'I just don't like the idea of giving that much power to anybody on one of my movies.' The film's soundtrack album was released on December 18, 2012. Ennio Morricone made statements criticizing Tarantino's use of his music in Django Unchained and stated that he would 'never work' with the director after this film, but later agreed to compose an original film score for Tarantino's in 2015. In a scholarly essay on the film's music, notes that the vast majority of film music borrowings come from films made between 1966 and 1974 and argues that the political and musical resonances of these allusions situate Django Unchained squarely in the Vietnam and Watergate era, during the rise and decline of Black Power cinema. It's as unwholesome, deplorable and delicious as a forbidden cigarette.' Writing in, critic compared Django to Tarantino's earlier: 'Like Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained is crazily entertaining, brazenly irresponsible and also ethically serious in a way that is entirely consistent with its playfulness.' Designating the film a Times 'critics' pick, Scott said Django is 'a troubling and important movie about slavery and racism.' Filmmaker praised Django, tweeting that the movie 'is one of the best film satires ever. A rare American movie on slavery and the origins of our sick racist history.' To the contrary,, film critic for the Entertainment Weekly, wrote: ' Django isn't nearly the film that Inglourious was. In his review for the Indy Week, David Fellerath wrote: ' Django Unchained shows signs that Tarantino did little research beyond repeated viewings of Sergio Corbucci's 1966 spaghetti Western and a blaxploitation from 1975 called, written by and starring.' An entire issue of the academic journal Safundi was devoted to Django Unchained: [ ] ' Django Unchained and the Global Western,' featuring scholars who contextualize Tarantino's film as a classic 'western'. Dana Phillips writes: 'Tarantino's film is immensely entertaining, not despite but because it is so very audacious—even, at times, downright lurid, thanks to its treatment of slavery, race relations, and that staple of the Western, violence. No doubt these are matters that another director would have handled more delicately, and with less stylistic excess, than Tarantino, who has never been bashful. Another director also would have been less willing to proclaim his film the first in a new genre, the 'Southern'.' Top ten lists [ ] Django Unchained was listed on many critics' top ten lists. Diamantina Mountains, Brazil, 1821. A slave trader, ANTONIO, returns to the decadent, but imposing farmhouse he inherited to discover his wife has died in child birth. Confined to this desolate property in the company of his demented mother-in-law and numerous slaves, he marries his dead wife's niece, BEATRIZ, a child of 12. A restless soul, he returns to his trading expeditions, and leaves his child wife behind. The loneliness of the big house in the rugged landscape mirrors that of its inhabitants. Each one has been displaced from his original home and forced into co-existence. The undercurrents of violence and prejudice, which still plague the Brazil of today, accelerate the inevitable tragedy which, in turn, heralds the tides of change. A backlands tragedy set in early 19th century colonial Brazil, Daniela Thomas' slow-burn slavery drama unfolds on a luminous black-and-white widescreen canvas. As a member of the key creative team behind the Rio Olympics opening ceremony last year, Daniela Thomas helped to conceive a celebration of Brazilian cultural identity that refused to gloss over the shameful chapters of the past. Upon returning from a slave trading expedition, Antonio discovers that his wife has died in labor. Confined to a decaying property in the company of his aging mother. In the Diamantina Mountains of Brazil in 1821, shortly before independence, a slave trader (Adriano Carvalho) finds that his wife has died in labor. One of the most powerful sequences in that arena spectacle was the arrival of African slaves. Pushing stylized plows while shuffling along on shackled feet, they gradually integrated in the Olympics pageant with indigenous Brazilians, European colonists and subsequent immigration waves to form the ethnically complex mestizo population of today. In Thomas’ darkly oneiric epic, Vazante, the director and her screenwriting partner Beto Amaral take a deeper plunge back into history to examine once again the roots of that mosaic of miscegenation in a context far removed from civilization, bristling with the tensions of violence, subjugation and forced cross-cultural cohabitation. Set in 1821, when Brazil was on the verge of independence, it's a slow-burn drama with a fairly austere attitude toward conventional exposition, dialogue and character development, which will confine it to the commercial margins. But the film is also transfixing in its formal rigor, impressive craft and striking visual beauty. Those factors, plus its searing depiction of racial cruelty and the weight given to its female characters in a patriarchal world, should spark some specialized distribution. Photographed by Inti Briones in the inky textures of black and white, Vazante was shot on rugged locations in the craggy Diamantina Mountains that evoke the Wild West. Loose, handheld camerawork tracks mule trains through dense vegetation, composed interiors are illuminated by period-appropriate light sources, and the novelistic action is punctuated by imposing shots of malevolent skies that look like the charcoal drawings of a disturbed mind. They give the illusion of magnifying the already expansive widescreen frame to twice its size. Thomas also used black and white to notable, though far less arresting, effect in her 1995 debut feature Foreign Land, a fado-inflected noir co-directed with frequent collaborator Walter Salles. Some of the themes here of corrupted power, cultural discordance and even colonialism in a certain sense echo that contemporary story. The new film opens during a downpour, with a young Portuguese settler and her baby dying while she's in labor. Taciturn Antonio (Adriano Carvalho) returns with a fresh chain of slaves and livestock to the sprawling farmhouse he has acquired by marriage. He hauls a linen chest full of robes for his wife and son, only to find himself a childless widower. Scarcely bothering to communicate with his black housekeeper (Geisa Costa) or the slaves that live in rudimentary housing on his land, he gets even less company from his senile mother-in-law (Juliana Carneiro Da Cunha), who might as well be absent. Right from the start, the threat of insanity hangs in the sleepy air, in Antonio's angry isolation or in the accusing eyes of the slaves that follow his every move. One new arrival in particular (Toumani Kouyate) appears from the tribal markings on his face to have come from a noble background. But his lack of a common language with the other slaves means his rejection of bondage is communicated purely by his rage. With the property's diamond mines no longer producing, Antonio is persuaded by Jeremias (Fabricio Boliveira), a foreman with knowledge of the land, to embrace the switch to farming. Human beings are considered as property, scarcely different from the beasts of burden on the farm, a harsh reality evident in the willingness of Jeremias, a black Brazilian native, to dole out humiliating punishment to the African slaves who are slow to adapt to the new routines. Having shaken off his grief, Antonio takes a new bride, settling on Beatriz (Luana Nastas), the precocious youngest daughter of his late wife's brother (Roberto Audio). The latter's own bitter spouse (Sandra Corveloni) is anxious for them to escape what she describes as a cursed place, and their move into town leaves Beatriz alone to face a new role for which she is unprepared. In an unexpected show of restraint, Antonio holds off on consummating the marriage until Beatriz begins menstruating, bringing her a doll from one of his cattle- and slave-trading trips, which further confuses the dreamy child bride. The master continues to take the slave woman Feliciana (Jai Baptista) into his bed, her proud indignation perfectly visible beneath her silent compliance. But during one of Antonio's prolonged absences, Beatriz begins a playful flirtation with Feliciana's son Virgilio (Vinicius Dos Anjos), a sweet boy close to her in age. That interaction spreads anxiety among the household servants and other slaves, triggering consequences that simmer into a stunning explosion of violence. Thomas' storytelling skills are less precise than her command of imagery and mood, and the two-hour film could definitely benefit from tightening. But there's never a moment in this starch-free period piece that doesn't feel fully inhabited or authentic. That applies to the production and costume design, with its shabby vestiges of former prosperity, and also to the unshowy performances of both the colonial settlers and the slaves. The contribution of veteran Portuguese sound designer Vasco Pimentel merits special mention. Enveloping the action in a transporting thicket of birds and buzzing insects; snorting livestock and cowbells; wind and rain; gurgling water, sloshing mud and rustling trees and grasses — he brings to unsettling life a natural world both seductive and hostile. We gave it an A Christian Bale is the rare actor who can say more with his eyes than many others can with a dozen for-your-consideration monologues, and his work in Scott Cooper’s brutal and beautiful new Western, Hostiles, ranks among his most impressive. Cooper, the director of Crazy Heart, collaborated with Bale once before, on 2013’s little-seen Out of the Furnace — a harrowing, death-trip thriller that was one of the year’s best movies. Here, the two are working in a similar key, but there are moments of grace to be found, too. Bale plays Capt. In making its story primarily about one white man’s redemption, the film falls back on a well-worn if still potent dramatic trope. Entertainment Studios Motion Pictures has moved back its wide release on “Hostiles,” starring Christian Bale, from Jan. Joe Blocker, a haunted soldier in the untamed West in 1892. He’s a career officer famous for his ruthless cruelty and bloody subjugation of Native Americans. He, of all people, is assigned to take an ailing, imprisoned chief (Wes Studi) back to Montana to die on his tribal soil. With a small group of soldiers, Blocker leads the chief and his family across the plains through deadly encounters, picking up a lone woman (Rosamund Pike) after her husband and children have been massacred. Pike, who was so great being bad in Gone Girl, makes good on that promise here with a ferocious performance that’s both heartbreaking and excruciating to witness. Shot in New Mexico and Colorado, Hostiles is visually stunning. And its themes of blind hatred and eventual understanding between the races is reminiscent of Dances With Wolves, minus the preachiness. Still, the biggest draw is watching Bale deliver another master class in invisible acting. Every gesture feels authentic. You immediately understand this spiritually spent man — for better and worse. Westerns can be a tough nut to crack, but Hostiles may be the finest example of the genre since Unforgiven. Summary: Set in 1892, Hostiles tells the story of a legendary Army Captain (Christian Bale) who, after stern resistance, reluctantly agrees to escort a dying Cheyenne war chief (Wes Studi) and his family back home to tribal lands. I don't like westerns or civil war films (except for 'Gone With The Wind'), and the trailer didn't make this film appealing to me. I like films that entertain. However, I gave in and quickly realized it was Christian Bale (I don't know why my boyfriend confuses Bale with Brolin), who was very unlikable at first. After a slow beginning, the story becomes very compelling and it doesn't matter that it's a western or whatever this movie is. The story is about human dignity and what it takes to get along with people who don't look like you, or think like you. As the story progresses, both sides gain respect for the other as they endure the same horrible situations. Wish more people were really like that during trying times and still able to show empathy and caring. The end of the film was a bit of a tease on what was going to happen next, and we're glad the film ended the way it did. On top of a compelling story (at least the story was compelling for us), it has great acting, and wonderful scenery. I wish I knew where they filmed. The cinematography was gorgeous! “Hostiles” stars Christian Bale and Rosamund Pike and was written and directed by Scott Cooper. The film attempts to capture the reality of life in the late 19th Century west as did “Unforgiven” but, unlike the latter film, it fails to keep the interest of the viewer as this small group of “Hostiles” stars Christian Bale and Rosamund Pike and was written and directed by Scott Cooper. The film is too long and lacks the substance needed to overcome what basically are scenes of campfires and trails with actors mostly mumbling insignificant dialogue. I give the film a 7.0 rating based mostly on the magnificent photographic work of cinema photographer Masanobu Takayanagi and the perhaps too understated but nevertheless fine acting of Mr. Elegantly made seemingly authentic western with a strong performance by Christian Bale is a simple classic kind of tale. The only real problem is it's nothing new with the expected genre tropes delivering predictably in grand settings, so if it wasn't coming after over a 100 years of westerns and personally a lifetime of seeing them it would rate higher here (which brings up the question, do you account for that as a critic or just go with how it affects you? I rate based on the impression on me only). This should have been titled: BORINGS instead of hostiles. The only thing hostile at this movie, was the audience. What an absolute long, boring flick. Reviewed by, January 1, 2013 The world has survived all sorts of doomsday dates in recent years. 1/1/2000, 5/21/11, 11/11/11, 12/12/12, and 12/21/12. Next up: every day The Asylum releases a new movie. It doesn't get any 'doomier' than that, and their 12/12/12 might be all the proof anyone needs. Bloodier and far more 'out there' than most Asylum films, 12/12/12 dabbles in dark arts, satanism, the occult, and the flat-out weird in its effort to frighten audiences. The film works on a very base level in that it creates a legitimate sense of unease and creepiness, but otherwise fails to muster up anything of value. Maybe that's enough, maybe it isn't, but audiences looking for the truly odd might want to give this one a watch. All others are advised to stay away unless demonic babies sound like a good idea. The plot: A woman is in violent labor. The baby is surgically forced from the womb, and it murders the attending physician and nurse. The family -- plus little Sebastian -- returns home to find dead rats and flies in and around the house. The family soon comes to learn -- first hand -- that the infant craves not mother's milk but rather human blood. It murders the father and kills anyone -- law enforcement, good samaritans -- with whom it comes into contact. It soon becomes apparent that the child may not be normal (really?!) but rather a key cog in a dark satanic cult and, perhaps, even the child of the devil itself. 12/12/12 features a pleasing high definition image. The Asylum's 1.78:1-framed transfer handles the digital footage well enough, showing only trace amounts of banding and only a little bit of noise around lower-light scenes. Details are sharp and crisp, revealing general around-the-house objects as well as skin and clothing textures to high definition satisfaction. The movie is a little dim and dark in many scenes, but the color palette appears accurate throughout. Black levels never go too dark or too pale, and flesh tones never betray natural hues. 12/12/12's DTS-HD MA 5.1 lossless soundtrack delivers the film's sonic elements satisfactorily. There's a fine sense of space to the track; music and effects both naturally drift to the sides and gently envelop around the back. Ambient effects are handled well, including background police radio chatter and blaring sirens. Bass is heavy and deep in a few scenes, some high-end piercing sound effects don't fall apart, and various squishy sounds of horror are delivered with care. Dialogue is accurate and center-focused. 12/12/12 is a bloody picture that will leave viewers uneasy at the mere sight of the hell creature. It's certainly different to say the least, blending all sorts of elements into a creepy but also largely amateurish picture that's smoothly made but poorly acted, lazily paced, and sometimes incomprehensibly written. Fans of the truly strange might enjoy it, but mainstream audiences and casual Horror fans should pass. The Asylum's Blu-ray features acceptable video and audio to go along with a couple of brief supplements. Recommended only to fans of fringe cinema. This film however lasted longer and had way more to it which made it better. Phoenix as the villain was kind of better than Millicent as he was more cunning. Knuckles was a great addition, how you couldn't like him is just wrong, if you like Knuckles The Echidna then you'll like Knuckles McGinty. Mr Curry could have done more although they gave Mr Gruber a more dominant role like in the books. The scenes were mainly funny. Judy was attractive like in the last film but three years' film difference can emphasize how much actors can change, especially Johnathan and Judy. The prison bit was a bit like Muppets Most Wanted as Paddington befriends his cell mates and then they start to enjoy themselves and then at the end they help his escape, only difference is that some of them join him. Overall a 9/10 for this film. Can't wait for Paddington 3. Paddington, now happily settled. Original title Paddington 2. IMDb Rating 8.2 4,594 votes. TMDb Rating 8 votes. Log in to post links.
